Cowboy Junkies. Formed in Toronto in 1985 around three Timmins siblings: Margo on vocals, Michael on guitar and songs, Peter on drums, plus bassist Alan Anton. The breakthrough, The Trinity Session, was recorded mostly in a single day, November 27th, 1987, inside Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity. The band gathered around one Calrec ambisonic microphone, so the church's natural reverb became part of the sound. Their hushed 'Sweet Jane' is modelled on the Velvet Underground's live 1969 version, not the studio cut, and Lou Reed was often quoted calling it his favorite cover of the song. The album went platinum in the US and double platinum in Canada, they entered the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2019, and their best-of Open to Beauty: Best of the 21st Century came out in 2026.
