It started with a radio show late at night in San Diego back at the turn of the century. Just passed the year 2000. FM 94.9 carried a show called Midori's Big Sonic Chill, and I listened to it alone, long after everyone else was asleep every night. The bands were from all over; Massive Attack, Nick Drake, The Clash, Chemical Brothers, and Dido. Then I'd hear Cocteau Twins, Pixies, Everything But The Girl, and Bat for Lashes. Then I'd hear Pink Floyd and Broken Social Scene. There was nothing like it and I fell in love immediately. It wasn't the genres, but more of how the songs, when played together, made me feel.
That feeling is what this show chases: a little reminiscent, a little reflective, the kind of calm that helps you think, makes you introspective. Maybe you remember that one that got away, or you'll remember that one innocent time you took a chance...it's THAT. I pick every song by how it makes me feel when you put the songs and artists together. Not by charts, not by algorithms.
Now I'm in Las Vegas, and EKHO Sonic Chill is the show I always wanted to find on the dial so many years later. About two hours of downtempo, trip hop, dream pop and shoegaze, a few words between the songs, and room to think. Whether you're on a long drive or getting some work done, press play and let the rest of the world wait...and you can press escape any time.
